FAQs

  1. Is this for me?
We have organised the first IITK climbing competition for everyone over 5. There are no age categeories.
  2. This stuff looks risky. I'm not prepared for it.
We follow the best climbing practices at the IITK climbing wall. With a safety equipment, harness, rope and a certified belayer companion, you are totally safe 30 feet up in the air!
  3. Will I get to try before the competition?
Yes, once, after paying the fees. There would be an easy-for-all qualifying round.
  4. What shoes should I wear?
One needs to place feet (toes) on the climbing holds firmly. We higly recommend a tight-fitting white canvas PT shoe. You may wear this only during your climbing attempt, remove it later. You may get the canvas PT shoes from: Ravi Dixit: +91 99355 54244 (Adjacent to the tennis court) Sumit sports: +91 99352 41514 (Outside IIT gate) Mannu kumar (New Rai Footwear) +91 8299192664 (Kalyanpur)

Rules

For the Beginner and Intermediate category:

  1. The climber must wear the given safety harness.
  2. The climber must attach themselves to the top rope while climbing as directed (either using a screw-gate carabiner or tie a figure of eight knot through both the tie-in loops).
  3. All the climbers (together) will get to observe the route at the start of the competition for 2 min following which they will go to the isolation room.
  4. Every climber will have only one attempt to scale the wall.
  5. Each climber will have a maximum time limit of 4 min to attempt his climb on the wall.
  6. The Climbing Time for each competitor shall be defined as the period between the Starting Signal and the completion of the competitor’s attempt, i.e., (8).
  7. The climber can observe the route after the Starting Signal if they wish to do so. Note that this time is included within the given 4 min.
  8. A climbing attempt would be considered completed in the occurrence of one or a combination of the following events (whichever occurs earlier):
    1. Top: Climber holds the top hold on the wall with both their hands while maintaining balance for two seconds.
    2. Take: Climber asks the belayer to 'take', i.e., take the complete weight of the climber on the rope.
    3. Climber leaves the wall accidentally and puts their weight on the rope in an illegitimate position. The judges' decision will be final in such a case.
